January Bible Insights

Genesis 1:1            In The Beginning
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created... It was not man nor his imagination that created this world. It was God. In this world where God is ignored or reasoned away, may we always purpose to show others our God through His creation. NN

Genesis 4:18-32            A Name Isn't Everything

It is interesting how two very different people can have the same name. In Genesis 4:18-32 the Bible describes two of Cain’s descendents, Enoch and Lamech, both wicked like their forefather Cain: But if you continue to read to Genesis 5:17-26, you learn that there was another Enoch
and another Lamech. One, the Bible says walked with God. The other was the Father of Noah, whose righteousness is the only reason we are here today. That was just very interesting to me.

Genesis 5            Passing The Torch
"And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years… Methusaleh…begat Lamech…And all the days of Methusaleh were nine hundred sixty and nine years…Lamech...
begat Noah…And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years."

                                                                                                                                                            Genesis 5

My son and I created a timeline based on how long each of the men mentioned in this chapter lived and an interesting fact stood out in my mind. Adam was still alive when Lamech, Noah’s father, was alive. This means Lamech, most likely, learned about God and creation from Adam himself which he then passed down to Noah. I find this fascinating because I think of how awesome it would have been to personally know Adam and be able: To interview him regarding creation, the Garden of Eden, and naming the animals.  To discuss with him the fall and ask
him Why, Why, Why???  To relate these stories to my sons.  It is also comforting to know
that Noah was able to carry all of this information with him on the ark and to preserve the history
of early man. I find it important to know about history because the more we know, the more we can learn from it.  It is also important to pass on the wisdom gained from learning about God in history to our sons and daughters.  After all, history is His Story.

Genesis 11:6            As One
“And the Lord said ‘Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this
they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them,
which they have imagined
to do‘.”
Genesis 11:6

The Lord said this while mankind was building the Tower of Babel. He basically said a
united mankind could accomplish whatever they wanted. This means for good, or for evil.
God confused their language, and made them spread over the earth. The idea that people
acting as one can accomplish anything imaginable is something Christians can learn from
as well. When we work as one, amazing things for the kingdom can happen. May our
prayer be, “Lord, wherever I am, help me to build the spirit of unity.”
