Faithful Workman, Approved Unto God

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the
word of truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15

How can I be a faithful workman? How can I be approved unto God? The word “faithful” means “firmly adhering
to duty; of true fidelity; loyal; true to allegiance.” A faithful workman would be “one who loyally does his duty.”
Are you doing your Christian duty? Do you read your Bible every day, pray without ceasing, love your neighbor
as yourself, and love God with all your being? Are you faithful at work, faithful to your family, and faithful to pay
your debts? Think, “Am I a faithful person?

A workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” A workman knows his trade. As a carpenter, you know your
tools. If you work with computers, you know how to use your programs. A painter knows what applications to
use his different brushes for. No one wakes up one day and knows how to build a house, how to program code,
or how to paint the Lord’s Supper. You had to diligently concentrate on learning to use the tools of your trade.
You learned to be confident in the use of your tools so you didn’t embarrass yourself. The same is true of the
Christian. We are all laborers for Christ, and it is our duty to know our tools. There is a joke about men reading
manuals. (I have always read them.) Many men prefer to “figure it out,” or have someone explain it. As a Christian,
this is not an option. We have to read the manual for ourselves. The Bible is our handbook, our building instructions,
and our guidebook to life. A good workman follows the company guidelines. Are you a faithful workman for Christ?

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word
of truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15. This verse is in the middle of a passage about debating pointless subjects, and giving heed
to lies. To be “approved unto God” we must rightly divide the word of truth. There was a practice among Jews at one
time to take a letter off of a word and move it to another word, or cut a word out of a passage and move it to another
spot, or remove a word entirely. After dividing or cutting up Scripture to suit their purpose they would then expound,
proving or creating whatever doctrine they pleased. Wrong isn’t it? How many so-called Christians do this today?
We take a verse from here or there about how God loves us and say “I believe those.” But we ignore “Abstain from
all appearance of evil”
or “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall
not cleave to me.”
We turn on our TV’s, hook up to the internet, and listen to whatever music we like without thinking
about it. No difference between this and what the Jews were doing, is there?

Do you want to be a faithful workman, and have God’s approval? You must loyally study, so you won’t be ashamed
before Him, and so you can rightly divide the Word of Truth.
