Evil Appearances
“Abstain
from all appearance of evil.” (1 Thessalonians
5:22) It doesn’t say “abstain from evil,” it says
“abstain from all
appearance of evil.” This means if it even looks evil, stay away from it.
How can this verse be explained to mean
anything other than what it says? “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
Galatians 5:19-21 gives us a practical
list of what evil is, "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are
these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,
strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings,
murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before,
as I have also told you in time past,
that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."
(Galatians 5:19-21) What do
you watch on TV?
What music or foul-mouthed DJ do you listen to on the way to work? What novels
are you currently reading? Are
you accountable to someone for where you surf on the internet? All of these
things constantly bombard our minds
with evil. You simply have to scroll through the channels on your TV and you
will see everything on this list.
"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is
sin." (James 4:17)
Do you know what you watch,
listen to, read, or the pages you surf are, or could appear, evil? Do you just
enjoy sin, but ease your conscience
by saying “I am not doing anything evil. I am watching others do evil.” It says
in James 4:4 "Ye adulterers and
adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?
whosoever therefore will be a friend
of the world is the enemy of God." It says in John 2:15 "Love not the
world, neither the things that are in the world.
If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." Friend,
will you choose to abstain from every
appearance of evil? Or will you find pleasure in sin for a season?
"But every
man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when
lust hath conceived,
it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do
not err, my beloved brethren."
James 1:14-16
