Mount N Great Dane Puppy School
Welcome to our Mount N Great Dane Puppy School!
Puppy School is about learning: learning to trust, learning to try new things,
learning to
be safe,
learning to obey, and most importantly, learning to love.
We believe a
well-adjusted puppy loves people, loves
life and loves to learn.
We have
developed a "curriculum" of age-appropriate life experiences to help our puppies
become well
adjusted and ready for adoption.
It is our goal at Puppy School to
provide the opportunity for puppies to develop their ability to
love...one big paw
step at a time, one loving touch at a time.
We love all our students and trust
you will too.
Below are pictures of
some of our Great Dane graduates during final exam
week.
Please
be patient as this page will require some time to load...we think
you will find it worth the wait!
Thanks again for visiting Mount N Danes.
Let us
know if you have any questions or comments.
So what do
we do at the Mount N Great Dane Puppy School? We expose the puppy to everything
we can think of! We live on a
working ranch so the puppies tag along with their
surrogate mom to listen and learn. How exciting play time is for the puppies
with
all the sights and sounds and smells. New things to touch include gravel,
dirt, wood, grass, vinyl, carpet, tile, wood chips, concrete, boulders, water,
hay, even snow seasonally (usually a most fun and picturesque moment). New toys to
play with include big balls,
small balls, squeaky toys, ropes, rattles, buckets,
and mirrors (out of their reach). New places to play include different rooms in
the house (including kitchen and bathroom), workshop, greenhouse, barn, pond,
creek, round pen, garden, and on the decks. New and different people to play
with include people with hats, men with beards, people with coats, little
people, big people, young people,
older people, short-haired and long-haired
people, handicapped people...people, people, people. New friends to play with
include
llamas, chickens, horses, cows, pet turkey, goats, sheep, cats, goldfish
in small yard pond, parrot, other breeds of dogs (large and small), abundant
wildlife at the pond and along the creek. New things to do include climbing on
boxes, climbing steps and then stairs, walking through doors and gates, watching
out for blackberry and rose bushes, swimming, riding in the ranch mule, riding
in the car, listening to night sounds, watching television, listening to music,
and much, much more.
We believe the personality of a
Great Dane puppy begins to develop at the moment of birth. Therefore, each of
our puppies is
assigned to a specific family or staff member at birth to work
with them until they are adopted by their permanent family. This
surrogate mom
is responsible to handle, socialize and teach age appropriate behavior during
the assigned puppy play times
each day. It is our goal to stimulate the
neurological growth and development of the dog. In addition, as puppies
are placed into
new homes, we ask for any specific concern the puppy might encounter regarding the safety or well-being
of the new puppy. If any challenges are presented, we immediately begin to develop the
puppy's exposure to that issue or situation. The age of your puppy at adoption
time will affect how much exposure the puppy will have had to certain elements.
True training cannot occur until approximately five months of age due to the
puppy's maturity level. However, in the same way the infant will respond to
certain stimuli, the young puppy can be taught to listen and respond. Mount N Great
Dane's are so eager to please. Our Dad and Moms have extremely sensitive and
loving temperaments and their puppies have mimicked their behavioral patterns.
Our experience has been Great Danes are a joy to train if you start early and build a
good human-pet relationship with them. Love is the training tool we use at Mount
N. It works very
effectively for us too! Consistency is the polishing tool we
use at Mount N. It engrains the lessons for a lifetime of Great Dane joy.
