          Soldiers Honor
        Those Who Gave

On the Thursday before
      Memorial Day 1,200 soldiers
of the 3rd U.S. Infantry place
      an American Flag at over
      260,000 graves in Arlington
      National Cemetery. They
      patrol the grounds 24 hours
      a day during the holiday
      weekend to ensure each flag
      remains standing.

    Memorial Day Trivia

Over two dozen cities
      claim to be the birthplace
      of Memorial Day.

     Memorial Day was
      officially proclaimed on
      May 5, 1868 by General
      John Logan. It was
      observed for the first time
      on May 30, 1868 when
      flowers were placed on the
      graves of Union and
      Confederate Soldiers at
      Arlington National
      Cemetery.

New York was the first
      state to officially recognize
      the holiday in 1873.

     By 1890 Memorial Day
      was recognized by all the
      northern states. The South
      refused to acknowledge the
day until after World War I
      when the holiday changed
      from honoring those who
died in the Civil War to
      honoring Americans who
      died in any war.

     At least 8 southern states
      still have an additional
      separate holiday to honor
      those who died fighting in
      the Civil War.

     In 1971 the National
      Holiday Act was passed
      which included Memorial
      Day as a Federal holiday.

In 1915 Moina Michael
      began wearing and selling
      poppies in honor of
      Memorial Day.

     In December 2000 the
      National Moment of
      Remembrance was passed
at 3:00 p.m. local time for
      all Americans to observe a
      moment of remembrance
      and respect.
