One April morning in 1945, army medic and conscientious objector Desmond
Doss requested to
pray before advancing to attack a Japanese position on the
island of Okinawa. His request was granted, and when he finished his company
was ordered to the front.
Doss’ Company B of the 77th Division was
assisting Company A take an escarpment. When Company A received heavy
casualties, Company B was ordered to take the position alone. They took the
position without losing one man, and the only injury was an injured hand
from a falling rock. No one could understand how Company B could have
climbed a hill and defeated entrenched Japanese soldiers without losing a
man. With no other explanation, the official report filed was, “Doss prayed.”
G.A. Henty (a historical novelist of the 1800’s) wrote
in the foreword of
his book
St. George for England
“My Dear Lads, You may be told
perhaps that there is no good to be obtained from tales of fighting and
bloodshed, -
that there is no moral to be drawn from such histories. Believe
it not. War has its lessons as well as Peace.”
In the spring of 1940,
the German army had whipped the French and British forces, and over 300,000
men were trapped in the city of Dunkirk on the British Channel. The King of
England sent out a national call to prayer, imploring God to rescue their
armies. God sent a fog to
stop the German Air Force from attacking, and gave
the British time to evacuate the soldiers. If these men had
not been
evacuated, Great Britain would have likely lost the war, and Hitler would
have controlled Europe. This was one of the greatest military miracles in
history. England prayed, and God answered.
In 1787 the American
States sent delegates to a Constitutional Convention to form a new
government for
the American people. After four to five weeks of bitter debate, 81 year old
Benjamin Franklin rose up and said…
“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live,
the
more convincing proofs I
see of this truth - that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow
cannot fall
to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise
without His aid?”1 He went on to make a motion that prayer should be
offered each day before they began deliberations. The motion was passed, and
55 men went on to craft the greatest plan of government
to have ever been formed. Incidentally, every session
of both houses of Congress since that time have been opened with prayer.2
"Moreover as for me, God forbid that I
should sin
against the Lord in ceasing
to pray for you: but I will
teach you
the good and the right way: Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with
all your heart: for consider
how great things He hath
done for you."
1 Samuel
12:23-24
"Then saith He unto
them,
My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and
watch with Me. And He went a little further, and fell on His face, and
prayed, saying, O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me:
nevertheless not as I will,
but as Thou wilt."
Matthew 26:38-39
"After this
manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in
earth, as
it is
in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our
debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
glory, for ever. Amen."
Matthew 6:9-13
"And Jabez called on
the
God of Israel, saying, Oh
that Thou wouldest bless
me indeed, and
enlarge my coast, and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou wouldest keep me
from evil, that it may not grieve
me! And God granted him
that which he
requested."
1 Chronicles 4:10
"If I shut up heaven that there
be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send
pestilence among my people; If My people, which are called by My name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
will heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:13-14
